Some people think handwriting is just a dying skill. But to graphologists, it’s something far deeper—a map of the mind.
In this excerpt, Mike Ruggiero explores the eerie world of handwriting analysis, from baseline slants to bold loops, and what it says about serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy.
Danger Signs in Writing - Does Your Writing Look Like Ted Bundy’s?
Did you know you can tell a lot about someone just based on their writing? You can! Even a book on communication or a book on how to read body language probably doesn’t include information on what is known as graphology, or the study of writing. Someone’s writing provides valuable insight into their personality. Reading human behavior is valuable, but having the ability to look at someone’s writing to gain additional insight into their personality can be a valuable tool!
Here is a quick lesson on a danger sign found in writing. Our writing has three of what is known as zones. The three zones relate to various aspects of our personalities. After all, handwriting is not just handwriting – it’s BRAIN writing! Asking someone to write differently than what they are accustomed can be as difficult as asking them to change their personality.
Let’s take a look at the zones. Note in the image below, the area from the mid-point in the line to the top of the line is known as the upper zone. The upper zone is where your hopes and imagination are. The area from the baseline to the mid-point is the middle zone. This is where it can be seen how the person copes with day-to-day issues. Below the baseline is the lower zone. The lower zone is where relationships and sexual drives are.
Someone who begins their letters in the lower zone reveals a sexually sadistic side to their personality. In writing, the more prominent an aspect is, the more prominent those traits are in the personality.
For example, take a look at the below signature of John Wayne Gacy. Gacy was a sexually sadistic serial killer.
Notice anything? Do you see how he starts the “J and the “G” in the lower zone? That is two letters starting in the lower zone in just a sample of his signature.
Now, let’s take a look at a sample of writing from Ted Bundy, below.
Most are familiar with the nature of Ted Bundy’s crimes. I hope you noticed it! Yes, in what is a very small sample of his handwriting, note how many times Bundy begins letters in the lower zone? Giving the benefit of the “close ones” – I count 17 times in a sample of only 32 words – that is significant!
Now, take a look at your writing. Do you do it? Probably not. I’ve taught these skills to law enforcement officers across the country and nobody has ever raised their hand when I asked that question. Because, they don’t have that personality trait… thankfully!
There are other aspects present in Bundy’s writing that aren’t in your writing or mine, but that’s what we’ll focus on for today.
Keep in mind, having this aspect in your writing doesn’t mean you are a sexually sadistic serial killer, but it does lend toward being sexually sadistic. Also, not having the characteristic doesn’t mean the person can’t be, it only means they don’t have this particular aspect in their writing.
I’ve taught interrogation methods to law enforcement officers all over the country, and this is something they often don’t even know. The more you learn human behavior, the more adept you will become at spotting danger signs.
Graphology is an artform, not an exact science. Keep in mind, it is brain writing, not just handwriting. Knowing a little something about the insight someone’s writing can provide just may help you uncover the truth! To check out more on human behavior, Sergeant Mike Ruggiero wrote a book as good as any of the top body language books, titled Uncover the Truth Methods for Detecting Deception using Body Language and Statement Evaluation
