Dutch Treats: Meet Nicolet Steemers
• Tell our readers a little about yourself.
I live in the east of The Netherlands. After training at a conservatory, I was originally a classical guitarist. Now, though, I’m a full-time writer.
• What are some of your favorite books by American authors, and why do you like them?
Laura Lippman, Belinda Bauer, and Sue Grafton are my all-time favorites. Their books aren’t especially bloody, but they’re suspenseful thanks to their psychologically fascinating characters.
• Do you have other work available in English?
Ellen Holms: Private Detective and The Club of the Klutzes are both available in English as audiobooks. The former is a detective story, and the latter is a comic novel about a physical therapist who’s confronted by a competitor who practices alternative therapies.
• If American readers were to visit The Netherlands, what would you encourage them to see?
I recommend Dordrecht (a beautiful old city) and Rotterdam (modern, with interesting architecture).
pull quote from “Eight Days a Week”
Smoke billowed into his bedroom through the crack between the door and the hardwood floor. He kicked off his blankets, jumped out of bed and threw open the door. The flames reached to his shoulders, licked hungrily at his face. He slammed the door and raced around the room, snatching up his clothing, his shoes, whatever he could grab.
