We are deeply saddened to share that Monty Orrick, author of The Crater Lake Murders and Feeding the Beast, has passed away.
Monty spent twenty-five years as a TV news photojournalist in Oregon, earning four Emmy nominations while telling stories with pictures that lingered long after the broadcast ended. His gift for visual storytelling carried into his writing—whether exploring wild trout streams in the Sierras, chronicling life behind the camera, or unraveling the decades-old mystery that became The Crater Lake Murders.
Born and raised just north of San Francisco, Monty graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in English Literature. He lived a life filled with curiosity and adventure—backpacking, fly fishing, and writing with humor and heart. His love for nature and conservation led him to produce a documentary for California Trout and pen essays for The Drake and California Fly Fisher.
Monty’s dedication to the Crater Lake case began in 2011 and culminated in a breakthrough discovery nearly a decade later. His persistence and care brought truth to light for a story that had long been forgotten.
Beyond his work, Monty will be remembered for his warmth, wit, and love for his family—his wife Carolyn and their twin daughters, Brooke and Beth.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones and all who were touched by his life and work. For those who wish to connect or share memories, there is a dedicated Facebook page for The Crater Lake Murders.
Thank you, Monty, for your words, your stories, and your relentless pursuit of truth. You will be deeply missed.
