Some books are written because a story needs to be told. Others are written because silence has gone on too long.
Simple, Safe & Secret is Eve Carson’s deeply researched account of the disappearance and murder of Joan Webster, a 25-year-old Harvard graduate student whose case has remained tangled in unanswered questions, shifting narratives, and a justice system that, according to Carson, failed the very person it was meant to protect.
As Joan’s sister-in-law, Eve brings both personal connection and determined investigation to this story. Her work is not only about what happened to Joan, but about the darker questions surrounding the investigation, the prosecution, and the fight for truth that continues decades later.
Eve Carson was born and raised in Danville, Illinois, and grew up in a close-knit family that became a source of strength through life’s challenges. She graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Industrial Management and Economics and began her career working for General Motors and IBM.
Eve married Steve Webster, Joan Webster’s brother, in 1980, and was the only non-blood relative in the immediate family when Joan disappeared. Since then, she has spent years researching, writing, and speaking about Joan’s case. Her work has appeared in publications including Crime Magazine, The Journal of Forensic Research, The Journal of Forensic and Crime Investigation, Medium, and Unsolved Magazine. She has also presented aspects of the case at forensic research conferences and appeared on programs including The Whistleblower.
Today, Eve lives in the Midwest, where she continues her writing, consulting work, and her ongoing pursuit of justice for Joan.
If you’re drawn to true crime stories that go beyond the headline and ask harder questions about evidence, accountability, and justice, Simple, Safe & Secret is a powerful and unsettling read.
